Today is National Puppy Day, and arguably the most adorable day of the year! Today we’re going to share some fun facts about why puppies can help improve your mental health, as well as local a.ea shelters who need our help and support to save dogs and puppies in our community.
Did you know…
- Research shows that simply looking at pictures of puppies can improve your mental health, and increase your focus!
- Dogs can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, decrease loneliness, and improve your overall health by encouraging you to incorporate more movement and exercise into your daily routine!
- The average dog has the intellectual capacity and intelligence of a 2-year-old to 2-and-a-half year old human!
- A normal litter of puppies can range from 1 to 12 puppies depending on the size and breed of the dog, but an average of 5-6 puppies per litter is the average across all breeds. Dogs can sometimes have up to three litters a year, which is why it is recommended to spay and neuter your pets early to decrease the population in shelters.
- Nearly 25% of dogs in animal rescues and shelters are actually pure bred dogs! That’s 1 in 4 purebreeds on average in shelters across the United States according to the HSUS.
- There are an average of about 4 million shelter pets adopted each year according to the ASPCA.
- Adopting an animal means saving more than just one life! Sure, your new buddy gets a fabulous and safe new home, but you’re also clearing the shelter space for another animal in need to be rescued in their stead and find their forever home next!
