Every year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety puts every major car in the automotive industry through a series of crash tests in order to determine which cars are totally and perfectly safe to drive, and which ones could use a little more engineering help in that arena the next model year around.

For 2013, however, the IIHS went the extra mile by releasing a list of what they consider to be the thirteen safest cars of the year, and we were especially excited to find that the 2013 Kia Optima was right there, smack dab in the middle of the list.

Generally, when a car scores top marks of “Good” in frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof strength crash tests, the IIHS awards that car the title of Top Safety Pick. The thirteen cars on this list, however, were given the special distinction of Top Safety Pick+, with that last little bit of punctuation meant to show that our gorgeous midsize sedan is a cut above a whole bunch of its competition.

When it comes to the safety of the 2013 Kia Optima, Libertyville drivers most often praise the four-wheel antilock disc brakes, the standard stability and traction control, and the multitude of airbags located all throughout the cabin of the car. The optional rearview camera doesn’t hurt anything either, and that’s why the IIHS (and the federal government who, we should add, also gave the Optima a five-star safety rating) named this vehicle one of the safest in the business. It’s not just a Top Safety Pick, remember; it’s a Top Safety Pick+.
