The iditarod Dog Sled race is an iconic winter event for Alaskans, and this year is the 51st anniversary of “The Last Great Race”!  This impressive dog sledding race is nearly 1,000 miles long, and takes one of two routes: The Northern Route is used on even numbered years, and the Southern Route is used in odd numbered years.  This year the competitors will travel 998 miles on the Southern route through Iditarod and along to the Yukon River communities Shageluk, Anvik, and Grayling and through to the town of Nome.
