This week is Poison Prevention Week. We’ll be highlighting ways to keep your garage and vehicle organized to eliminate safety hazards due to chemicals, oil, and other fluids.  We’ve got some tips on how to dispose of them safely, how to best clean up those messes, and even how to keep your pets out of harm's way in the garage.  Check it out on today’s blog! more Tips to Keeping Your Garage Safe from Chemicals and Hazardous Wastes Old batteries have a risk of corrosion and leaks, and properly disposing of them at designated waste collection sites can prevent injury and environmental damages.  Bring old or used car batteries to your local recycling center instead of storing them in your garage. Some local auto parts stores may even have a battery drop-off program. When changing your oil, use a drain pan and collection bucket to catch the fluids as they’re released. Bring them to your local designated hazardous waste disposal facility or recycling center immediately.  If you’ve spilled oil in your garage, you can use an oil absorbent mat, a substance like Oil-Dri, or the standby of kitty litter. Pour liquids such as coolant or brake fluid or other contaminated fluids into a bucket or bin of kitty litter. It will absorb the liquid, and make it easier to transport to the waste facility. If you’ve spilled fluids, you can absorb the spill with clay cat litter, play sand, cornmeal, cornstarch, or even baking soda.  Apply one of these substances over the spill stain immediately, and this will help prevent it from seeping into the concrete or pavement of your garage. Things you may not expect can pose hazards to our canine and feline companions, as well as others!  We’re going to help you find ways to keep those little critters out of trouble, identify hazards to put far out of reach, and how to keep them safe if they get into your garage. Never leave your pets unattended in a garage. Garages can become extremely hot or extremely cold quite rapidly.  This can cause temperature related illnesses such as heat stroke or frostbite.  Make sure that if your pet is spending extended periods in a garage, it’s always by your side. Even if you’ve provided heating/cooling and adequate ventilation or water, it is not safe to leave your pets inside. There are numerous chemical liquids with corrosive properties that can cause burns, digestive upsets, or even fatalities if ingested by our pets.  Be sure that antifreeze, gasoline, motor oil, insect sprays, paints, cleaners, herbicides, soil bags, polishing solutions, wiper fluid, and other liquids are stored in their original containers and tightly sealed. Store them up and away from prying paws and nosy sniffers.  Clean up all spills and leaks immediately after they happen.  Keep your pets out of the way if you’re performing fluid changes or top-offs so they do not drink or lick any spills. Keep tools and batteries up and off the floor, and do not allow pets to lick them or chew on them. They’re at risk for serious injury, electrocution, and even death. Utilize airtight and locking storage items.  Place small items into lidded plastic bins that have child-lock features.  All tools and ephemera should be placed into toolkit boxes and locked securely so that your pet cannot get into it, knock it down, or open it to see what “forbidden snacks” are inside. Keep garbage and waste bins secured. Pets love to sniff and explore inside trash cans, garbage bags, recycling bins, etc, so it’s important you keep them stowed safely to reduce risk of suffocation by bags or other serious injury due to ingestion or otherwise. Clean the garage floor thoroughly when you’re working on your projects and regular vehicle maintenance.  Even residual waste from chemicals, solvents, or soaps can pose a threat if licked or ingested or skin contact. Let us know in the comments below! Buying your first car so you’re ready for summer? Here are some tips to help you set your budget and prepare financially for the long haul. Determine your budget. Figure out what you can afford from money you’ve saved up, or what you can comfortably finance as recurring expenses and payments. Bear in mind that it costs about $7-$10k on average to maintain your car depending on the vehicle.  That cost should cover regular maintenance/basic repairs, but you will always want to be prepared for emergencies.  If you’re purchasing a used vehicle, we recommend doing a bit of cost analysis for the make/model/year for average repairs and routine mileage maintenance. Get some insurance quotes for the vehicles you’re considering, and do a cost breakdown for different payment plans to figure out which will work best for you and your bank account.  Insurance can cost upwards of $2k or more for new and younger drivers annually. Consider your commute (to and from school or work or activities) and check the fuel economy and mileage rates for the vehicles you’re interested in. Choose the one that is more cost conscious and has better miles per gallon to save on recurring costs. Test drive all of the cars you’re considering purchasing, and bring a trusted, knowledgeable driver with you as a second opinion when inspecting a vehicle’s handling, appearance, and condition.  Make sure you’re comfortable driving the vehicle before you plunk down that change!  If purchasing preowned or used, many sellers will also allow you to take the car to your personal mechanic for a once-over to make sure it’s reliable. Add up the cost of roadside assistance plans as well as roadside emergency kits. It’s better to have coverage in case of emergency and save on costly towing fees or emergency costs. Some vehicles sold through dealerships will have special plans that cover drivers in case of a vehicle collision or breaking down on the road.  Keeping an emergency bag in your car will ensure you’re prepared in a pinch!  Items like jumper cables, flares, tire repair kits can also save you time and money until help arrives.

March is Disability Awareness Month!  If you’re an able bodied person, chances are you may not have thought about how modern day to day activities may not be accessible to folks with disabilities or health concerns.  Today we’re going to shed some light on the subject, such as various accessibility needs to improve on roadways, adapting vehicles, accessible public transport, and related topics. more Let’s Talk About Disability! Did you know that WHO has estimated that more than 1 billion people are experiencing significant disability on a global scale? That means that about 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in every 6 people, experiences some form of disabling condition. In the United States alone, that number increased to 26%, meaning 1 in 4 people has a disability (2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics.)  Decreased mobility is one of the most common disabilities, along with motor impairments. Let’s learn about disability, terminology, representation, and accessibility from the disability community: What about accessibility in transportation? For drivers with disabilities, special vehicle modifications can be made to your already existing vehicle, but in some cases a vehicle may need to be more heavily modified and tailor made to the specific needs of someone with mobility aids. These adaptive technologies allow disabled drivers and passengers to access their vehicle and be independent of rideshares, transport, or caregivers/chauffeurs.  Adaptive equipment can include modified hand controls to help steer and operate the vehicle or enable turn/brake signals (push-pull, knobs, spinners, etc.); foot control modifications to the accelerator and brake pedal; assistive support straps and/or rings to assist entering and exiting a vehicle; specialized doors and hatchbacks; seat belt modifications for mobility, posture, and size; ramps or lifts for wheelchair users, and seat modifications for mobility issues and transferring from wheelchairs. Drivers may also attend special Driver Rehabilitation Training to learn how to use their adaptive devices, or how to drive/steer/operate a vehicle with a different limb than is typical of abled drivers.  You may explore more details around each very specific need and purpose for these adaptations via this fabulous guide, as well as other pertinent info on driver rehabilitation, adaptive driving evaluations, and what vehicle makes/models are most accommodating to adapting! When it comes to navigating streets and roadways as a disabled pedestrian, there are a number of things to consider when it comes to road traffic safety in our vehicle-centric world. “Complete Streets'' policies are a series of accessibliity needs that should be met in order to afford the most access to disabled citizens and travelers.  These concepts include increased pedestrian infrastructures such as sidewalks, crosswalks, accessible signals for visually impaired people, median crossing islands; traffic management in the form of speed humps, speed tables, clear signage, traffic lights and blinking signals; clear and dedicated bike lanes and bike parking; dedicated bus lanes, accessible bus shelters, etc. Many roadways and sidewalks are inaccessible to pedestrians, requiring them to be in harm's way and increasing risk that vehicles may have collisions. Things such as inadequate sidewalks; broken, unpaved, or cracked sidwealks and pavement; lack of curb cutouts or ramps or texture on corners for visually impaired individuals; sidewalk obstacles (think outdoor dining blocking wheelchair or mobility device access); bench obstacles and lack of seating while waiting for rideshares or public transportation; push buttons for traffic lights and cross signals being at wheelchair accessible heights; verbal and audible signals for safe crossing or traffic lights for visibly impaired pedestrians. Transportation and mobility accessibility are important civil rights issues for disabled and able bodied individuals; by increasing access to safe, affordable, and reliable transportation we create equity and equal opportunity for everyone!  By creating more accessible cities, increasing accessibility to public transportation and mass transit, and safer waiting areas for rideshare users, we can improve the experience and accessibility for disabled drivers and pedestrians. It’s Women’s History Month, and today we’re celebrating great women in Automotive Racing History!  Join us in learning more about these groundbreaking drivers and their wonderful accomplishments. more Great Women in the History and Future of Racing Ann Chester participated in two Grand National Races in 1950.  She drove in the Vernon and Hamburg rounds but didn’t finish them due to her PLymouth’s engine failing at Vernon and a crash at Hamburg.  However, even her limited participation was notable as it was 1 of 3 occasions where women have raced in a top-tier NASCAR race. Fifi Scott hailed from West Sacramento California, just like Chester, Scott was one of the earliest women drivers to participate in the NASCAR circuit.  Although she only entered into 2 races, she made her mark on the heavily male-dominated industry. Thus paving the way for women racers in the future! Bonnie West is presumed to be the first woman to win a NASCAR Late Model Race in 1975. She was the biggest female rival driver to the famed Diane Teel, and the two competed against one another in a match at Langley Speedway in Virginia in 1977  Sadly, her career met an untimely demise very early on after she and her husband were convicted and sent to jail for 5 years due to car theft related charges. Diane Teel began her racing career in 1976, when her husband Donald Teel, a NASCAR Crew Chief worked with Joe Carver to enter her into a local race to promote a local automotive store.  In 1977, she leveled up into the Limited Sportsman Racing Division, and had 16 top-ten finishes in 19 races, and half of them were Top 5 spots!  She also was considered one of the most successful drivers in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 1982 and 1983, and the first woman to win an official NASCAR-sanctioned event! Janet Guthrie was the first woman to race on a superspeedway in the 1976 World600, She first attempted to enter the Indianapolis 500 in 1976, but didn’t qualify at the time. Later she ended up qualifying in and competing for the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 in 1977.  She continued racing from 1977 through 1980!  She earned Top 10 starting positions and Top 10 Finishes in Indy-Car and NASCAR Cup racing.  In addition to her racing chops, she was also a former flight instructor and an aerospace engineer!  You can check out her driver’s suit and helmet on display at the Smithsonian Institution.  In 2006 Guthrie was also inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.  You can get a copy of her autobiography here! Shawna Robinson was one of 16 women who competed in the NASCAR Cup Series and 1 of 3 women to race in the Daytona 500 event.  Robinson began racing Semi-Tractors in 1983, with 30 victories, and in 1984 she became the GATR Truck Series Rookie of the Year.  In 1988, Robinson emerged into the stock car racing circuit becoming the first woman to win a top level NASCAR sanctioned race in Third Place.  In 1994 she earned pole position in the NASCAR Busch Series.  After a brief break from 1995 through 1999, in which she ran an interior decorating business and started a family, she eventually returned to racing in the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series.  NASCAR welcomed her back in 2001 in the Winston Cup Series, and she continued racing until 2005 when she retired.  Robinson continued on running her interior design and furniture business while continuing to spend time with her family. She is also a Stage 3 Breast Cancer survivor, which is in remission as of 2015. Danica Patrick began Go Kart racing at the age of 10, winning the World Karting Association Grand National Championship thrice over.  In 1998 she dropped out of high school to move to the UK where she competed in the Formula Vauxhall and Formula Ford events.  After returning to the US, she competed 5 times in the Barber Dodge Pro Series for Rahal Letterman Racing.  From 2003 to 2004 she raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series, where she was 3rd overall and was the first woman to win pole position in the series.  In 2005, she won three pole positions in the IndyCar Series, and was awarded Rookie of the Year for the ‘05 Indianapolis 500 and the ‘05 IndyCar Series! Patrick sped into the stock car racing circuit in 2010 for the NASCAR Nationwide Series/Xfinity Series, winning 4th places at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in ‘11.  Following in Shawna Robinson’s tracks, she placed 10th in the 20212 season, becoming the 2nd woman to receive a pole position in the Nationwide Series.  In 2015, she also topped Janet Guthrie’s record for highest number of Top 10 finishes by a woman in the Spring Cup series.  Danica Patrick dropped to part time racing in 2017, and officially retired in 2018 after racing in the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500. Sophia Florsch is a German FIA Formula 3 race driver, and began karting in 2005.  From 2008-2014, she participated in various karting events across Europe, and became the 1st female driver and youngest driver of 3 of those series she competed in. She is also the youngest winner of the Ginetta Junior Championship, and a podium finisher in the ADAC Formula 4 and ELMS.  She was the first female driver to score points in an ADAC Formula 4 race. She is also working alongside the BWT Alpine F1 Team and the Rac(H)er Program. Abbi Pulling is a British Racing driver who currently competes in F1 Academy and is also a member of the Alpine Academy program.  She’s currently 19 years old, but by the age of 15 she was already a British Karting Champion! She started racing in 2012 at the Tattershall Kart Club. In 2018, Abbi was the first person to ever win the Junior TKM title back to back, as well as the first person with back to back wins at the TKM Festival.  She made her debut in the Ginetta Junior Championship and had a podium finish in every round of the British Championship.  Abbi is aiming high with her sights set on competing at Le Mans someday! Today we’re sharing our tips and tricks about the 68th Annual Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2023, and best places to watch it along with other fun ways to celebrate the occasion!  The Chicago St Paddy’s Day Parade is the largest one in the whole US, and we’re very proud of that fact.  We’ll be covering where to catch the parade, more information about VIP access, and recommendations for local Irish eateries afterwards. It’s all right here on today’s blog. more 2023’s Guest of Honor is CLLR Danny Collins, Mayor of Cork County Ireland, and the theme of the parade will be “Recognizing Workers Rights”.  The grand marshall of this year’s parade is Tim Drea, President of the Illinois AFL-CIO. Unions have long championed for living wages, quality healthcare, and retirement benefits for workers, among other things, and that’s why Business Manager James F. Coyne, The Parade Committee, and Plumbers Local 130 are all so proud to celebrate this year’s theme, which highlights the importance for workers to have those rights. The City of Chicago is also very proud to have a history supporting workers, and further honors the many essential workers who gave so much and put forth great effort to care for our communities during the pandemic; the city maintains its ongoing commitment to workers rights for well paid jobs, benefits, and safer workplaces. You can catch the parade on March 11th starting at 12:30, with a live broadcast on ABC 7 Chicago. It will also be live streamed on ABC7CHICAGO.com and the ABC 7 News App. If you’d like to catch the river dyeing, you’ll want to get a spot along the Michigan Avenue Bridge, between Columbus Drive and State Street before 10AM. And the best views are from Upper Wacker Drive between Columbus and Fairbanks. Public transportation to and from the parade is recommended due to the high volume of visitors and parade viewers. The parade will kick off at Grant Park before marching its way North on Columbus Drive between Balbo Drive and Monroe Drive, so make sure you arrive early to get a prime spot!  Entry to the parade route begins at 10AM and will only be allowed at Jackson Avenue and Ida B. Wells. The main Viewing Stand is located at the Buckingham Fountain, and this is where dancers and bands will pause to wave to attendees so it’s prime viewing.  Grandstand VIP Seating is $60/seat to be purchased in advance, and the grandstand will open at 11:30AM.  March 10th at 9AM is the last day to purchase tickets, and it closes at 9AM; no refunds will be given, and ticket + ID is required for entry. Security will be checking bags and personal items such as purses; note that coolers, alcohol of any kind, open beverages, and personal water bottles won’t be allowed. The Northside Irish Parade will be taking place on March 12th at 12PM starting between Northwest HWY and Raven.  Parade participants will arrive at 10AM, and the parade will kick-off at 12PM for bystanders and onlookers.  The Parade will also be hosting its official afterparty at Zia’s Social.  Check out their Facebook Page for more information. The South Side Irish Parade will be on March 12th starting at 12PM to 3PM, and will kick off at 103rd and Western Avenue, and march south to 115th and Western.  The parade is approximately two hours long, and full event details, including events before and after, can be viewed on their website. The iditarod Dog Sled race is an iconic winter event for Alaskans, and this year is the 51st anniversary of “The Last Great Race”!  This impressive dog sledding race is nearly 1,000 miles long, and takes one of two routes: The Northern Route is used on even numbered years, and the Southern Route is used in odd numbered years.  This year the competitors will travel 998 miles on the Southern route through Iditarod and along to the Yukon River communities Shageluk, Anvik, and Grayling and through to the town of Nome. more WANT TO WATCH THE IDITAROD LIVE AT HOME?  Check out this live stream of the events here on race day: https://iditarod.com/live/ Live Out Your Iditarod Dreams in Bayfield Wisconsin Have you always wanted to try mushing for yourself first hand? Well, today is your lucky day, because we have got the ultimate road trip adventure for you less than a day’s drive away! Head on up to Bayfield in Wisconsin and book an excursion with Wolf Song Adventures.  You can opt for a Morning Dog Sled Run  (3.5-4hr) or Afternoon Dog Sled Run (2.5hr) on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from December through February.  If youre visiting in March you can opt for a Late Season run (3hr) or Sunset run (3-3.5hr).  You’ll arrive before your session to meet your team of dogs, get a special handling lesson, learn how to harness and hook them up to the sled, and may even get to feed them!  Some packages even include a meal served on the trail.  It’s the closest thing to being in the Iditarod yourself. While you’re in Bayfield, we also recommend checking out the following activities to make the most of a weekend away or an extended stay!  Winter is considedred to be the area’s “Quiet Season”, but there’s stil plenty of fun to be had.  There’s snowmobiling just outside of town, snowshoeing on the local trails, cross country skiing across frozen Lake Superior, downhill skiing at Mt. Ashwabay, or you can visit the Frozen Sea Caves of Lake Superior for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For the anglers in your midst, you’ll love ice fishing on Lake Superior for some impressive trout, salmon, pike, smallmouth bass, panfish, perch, and walleye.  It’s a winter activity lover's paradise! The Bayfield Winter Festival is a must if you’re in the area, and this year the festival is running this weekend from March 3rd through March 5th!  You can try fat tire biking on candlelit trails, take a polar plunge into Lake Superior, and even watch the US Coast Guard practice their ice search and rescue technique.  There will be activities for all ages as well as delicious food and beverage, and of course bonfires! Looking for something unique to do in Bayfield?  Check out the Bayfield Ghost Walks, Howl Adventure Center, or shop the wonderful boutiques and winter gear stores in the downtown area.
