Shop Talk: Snow Bank versus Vehicle

SNOW BANK VS VEHICLE Winter driving is tough enough without minor mishap sending you looking for a dependable body shop.  Winter’s extreme cold combined with the compact nature of something as innocent-looking as a snowbank pose serious threats to all plastic auto parts. more Winter snow accident featuring a car in a ditch on a snow-covered road. Winter's frigid temperatures leave plastic brittle. It cracks easily, without much pressure. Which plastic parts are most likely to crack or break during a run in with a snow bank? Front end air dams Plastic bumpers and plastic bumper covers Under-engine shields Wheel well liners Rearview mirror housings Headline lenses and trim Grill panels Fog lamps Fog lamp bezels A typical freeze/thaw cycle makes the snowbanks hard . Combine that with a slick surface and sliding while parking is a real threat. It’s the same with the snow banks piling up at the end of your driveway. In addition, those fluffy-looking snow drifts often mask even more threats – landscaping rocks, fire hydrants, etc. You can't always avoid sliding into a situation but you can get defensive. There is a lot written about defensive Driving, but none of it applies to Fluffy looking snow banks. It's only snow right? Wrong, plowing through that snow pile the plow left at the end of the driveway is like plowing through boulders of ice and can cause a lot of damage to the front bumper, Bumper air dams, grilles, fog lamps and engine under shields. Every vehicle and every snowbank is different. Cars ride low to the ground and it takes less to damage rocker panels, wheel wells and bumpers. SUVs and trucks have road clearance but they aren’t immune to ice and snow. A snowbank may be clean and soft-looking or ugly gray and foreboding. Either can hide a solid object underneath. Even snow jammed into the radiator can cause overheating and even more problems. The bottom line? As you pull into that parking spot, cruise a parking lot or bust your way into your driveway remember: Hitting a snowbank can be like hitting a stone wall. Ice is hard! Call our Body Shop or Service Center if you need help with repairs or maintenance.

World AIDS Day and Research for the Cure

Classic cares about our customers and our community, and believes in doing whatever we can to support and raise awareness for important issues.  Since today is World AIDS Day, we'll be supporting our community with a list of local HIV/AIDS related organizations and charities, facts on HIV/AIDS and prevention measures, and a special spotlight on a potential cure. more World AIDS Day began in 1988 as an international effort to raise awareness for those living with HIV/AIDS as well as prevention, treatment options, and research for a cure.  World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people to unite across the globe and show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, and pay tribute to those who have passed from AIDS related complications. Since its discovery in 1984, more than 35 million people have died from HIV/AIDS related issues, and more than 38 million people are currently living with the virus. Key Facts about HIV/AIDS and Prevention HIV can be transmitted from an infected individual through contact with human bodily fluids such as sexual interourse or intravenous drug use.  The virus can be found in bodily fluids from an infected person including blood, semon, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluid, vaginal fluid, and breastmilk. To reduce risk of HIV, always use a condom or barrier method every time you have sex, avoid intravenous drug use and any sharing of needles or medical equipment. You may ask a medical provider about securing PrEP( pre-exposure Prohphylaxis) Avoiding high-risk behaviors such as unprotected sex or drug use you reduce your risk of contracting HIV. Get regular testing and treatment for STDs and request an HIV/AIDS panel from your medical provider. If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV, speak to your doctor about Post-exposure Prophylaxis medicines within 72 hours of exposure and you may greatly reduce your risks of contracting the virus. An Unprecedented New Medical Advancement in Treating HIV/AIDS Here at Classic we sell cars and we’re passionate about cars, and we were very excited to learn about recent medical advancements in HIV/AIDS therapy known as “CAR T-cell therapy.”  As part of our own observation of World AIDS Day, we’d love to shed some light on this novel advancement in HIV/AIDS management. Dual Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell therapy (CAR therapy) is in development as a potential cure for HIV/AIDS.  Current treatment for HIV/AIDS involves a daily Antiretroviral therapy (ART therapy) which is designed to control the reproduction of HIV virus particles.  CAR T-cell therapy is an immunotherapy currently employed in Cancer treatments which reprograms a patient’s cells to recognize and eliminate mutated or infected cancer cells.  It is able to target and eliminate the diseased components to help patients recover from those life threatening illnesses.  CAR therapy has shown great promise for HIV/AIDS patients if programmed to target HIV particles! You can learn more about the improvements in this therapy via this post by Seattle Children’s Hospital and this post by Penn Medicine. TPMS Light Coming On in Cold Weather? Here’s Why!

We’ve asked our service techs and mechanics to share some of their advice on easy maintenance tips and tricks to help keep you safer on the road.  Today we’re highlighting the importance of properly inflated tires during winter weather months and cold temperatures.  Check it out! more Winter Tire Pressure Temperature changes overnight or from cold winter days can affect your tire pressure. This can cause the low-pressure indicator to appear. Large swings in temperature between day and night can affect the pressure in your tires by up to 10 PSI. The light may shut off on its own after you drive 20 minutes or so, as the air in your tires warms and expands and proper inflation level stabilizes. Regardless, you should get your air checked right away. The TPMS light means your tires are at least 25 percent below the proper air pressure. This is a safety risk, especially if you’re carrying a load close to your vehicle’s max capacity. There’s a greater chance of tire failure, compromised handling and increased wear and tear on your tires. Your gas mileage could also suffer. When you top off your tires, the TPMS light will go off as the tire regains the proper pressure. Note: If the warning light is flashing, this is a problem with the vehicle’s TPMS system, not your tires, and you should take your car to the shop. Our service technicians are available to help at a moment’s notice! Schedule an appointment today for routine maintenance and upkeep before winter weather arrives. America Recycles Day: Going Green and Recycling in the Automotive Industry

Whether you watch a news broadcast on TV, stream a podcast, listen to the radio, or scroll social media, chances are you’ve learned about climate change, environmental crises, and global efforts in reducing energy consumption and increasing recycling.  Today we’re celebrating America Recycles Day by highlighting some of the impressive efforts in the automotive industry to recycle and reuse metal and other materials in efforts to be more eco-conscious! more Did you know that 80% of your car can be recycled? That’s right!  Over 25 million tons of materials are reclaimed from old and discarded vehicles, and they’re one of the most widely recycled items of consumer refuse around the world!  Automotive recycling industry in the United States provides jobs to over 100,000 people, and nearly $25 billion in revenue.  And the North American (US/CA) auto recycling saves 85 million oil barrels each year, and enough reclaimed steel to create 13 million new cars! Automotive manufacturers do their best to reduce waste wherever possible.  Everything from steel and aluminum to car batteries (a whopping 98% are recycled) windshield glass, carpets, rubber hoses, and even seat belts can be repurposed or recycled!  Even tires can be recycled and repurposed into new goods such as rubber for shoes and sandals, filler for playground surfaces, etc.   Experts anticipate that scrap metal recycling will total upwards of $60 billion by the end of 2021, with about 60% of scrap metals being recycled from the automotive industry over the next 10 years. At Classic’s Dealerships, we’re proud to boast some wonderful “Green Options” when it comes to vehicle choice and styling, as both Toyota and Kia have been working diligently to improve their carbon footprint, increase the use of recycled materials, and other environmentally friendly measures, and we’re proud to be a part of it all: Recycled bio plastics are used in seat cushions and interiors of the Toyota Prius, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, and the Toyota Rav4. Toyota has eliminated use of over 12 tons of PVC materials in its assembly plants. Since 2010, Toyota has recovered and repurposed upwards of 140,000 hybrid batteries. Toyota also has a long-term recycling program and environmentally conscious vision in place. Since January 2015, 85% of every Toyota/Lexus vehicle must be reused or recycled, and it is expected that 95% of it will be recovered and reprocessed. Toyota created a program to recycle plastic bumper covers and convert them into plastic pellets to be sold and processed into other auto parts. The Kia Soul EV’s uses over 50lbs of bio-plastics per vehicle, which are fabricated from cellulose and sugarcane, in 10 different pieces of its interior from door panels to seats to carpets. Kia has adopted a climate friendly pledge including ECO-Friendly Car Lifecycle Management which you can learn more about here. Kia is also working with SK Innovation to create eco-friendly recollection of metals l ike lithium from used EV Batteries. Kia’s aim is to reduce waste and water consumption, and increase recycling efforts with an end goal of zero landfill contributions and zero waste incineration. Kia is expanding its range of “Battery Electric Vehicles” (BEVs) and increasing the total travel mi/km range per charge, and a fast 20 minute high-speed charge time.

Kia car leasing

Looking to Lease a New 2020 Kia in Waukegan, IL? Let Classic Kia Help!

When you come into Classic Kia, you expect the best, because we strive to give you the best Kia dealership experience possible. From Waukegan to Kenosha, WI, everyone knows they can trust the folks at Classic Kia. Today, we want to help out car shoppers looking to lease a car. more First off, a question many first-time lessees want to know is “Why lease in the first place?” Well, the answer is simple – for most, it’s the most affordable option available if they want to drive a new vehicle because you’re not paying for the whole car. Unlike financing, where you pay for the complete value of the vehicle over a period of monthly payments, the monthly payments in a lease represent the depreciation, or diminished value, of the car while you’re driving it. For example, let’s say you lease a new 2020 Kia Optima with an estimated value of $25,000 for three years. Our Kia dealers will estimate how much the value of that vehicle will depreciate over the course of your loan, and you have to pay that. If we estimate that the vehicle loses 40% of its value over the course of the lease, you’ll be paying off $10,000 over the course of three years, plus any fees and taxes. And don’t forget – once you lease a new Kia car with us, we can help you upgrade to the very newest model when your lease is up. So, come in today to discover a new way to purchase a car, or just bring home the next big thing. Our experienced Waukegan, IL Kia dealers are ready to give you the deal of a lifetime on the Kia lease you’ve been looking for.
